I Hate Credit Cards — How Do I Build My Credit Without Them?

Credit cards are useful tools for earning rewards, enjoying warranty and protection benefits, and building your credit. However, if you’re credit card averse for any reason, you can still build a decent credit history. Here’s what you need to know about building your credit without credit cards and information on a card you might prefer to a standard credit card.

What’s in a credit score?

To build a positive credit history, first you must first know what goes into your credit score. The most widely used score by lenders is the FICO score, which is calculated using five factors:

  • Payment history (35%): Make all of your payments on time, 100% of the time.

  • Credit utilization (30%): Keep ratio of debt balance to credit limit below 30%.

  • Length of credit history (15%): The longer the average credit account has been open and active, the better.

  • Types of credit in use (10%): A mix of different types of credit accounts is better than one type of credit account.

  • New credit (10%): Each new credit application imposes a “new credit penalty” on your score.

This information is pulled off of your credit report, so if anything is amiss on your report, your score will also be wrong. As a reminder from your friendly neighborhood Nerd: Pull your credit report from each of the three credit agencies each year for free by going to AnnualCreditReport.com. If there are any discrepancies, dispute them using these five steps.

How can I build credit without credit cards?

In order to build credit, you have to take on some type of debt. With a credit card, you can use credit while avoiding interest by paying it off in full each month. Here are a few other credit types you could use that may or may not cost you in interest:

  • Student loans: Federal subsidized government loans cost interest, but not until after you’ve finished school. Your student loan payments won’t be due (or accrue interest) until six months after you stop attending classes. If you pay off these debts before the grace period ends, you’ll enjoy no interest and establish payment history. For unsubsidized or private loans, you’ll have to pay interest.

  • Car and personal loans: The majority of loans will cost you interest, even with on-time payments. The interest rates are significantly lower than credit card rates, but they will cost you at least a little in interest over the life of the loan.

  • Mortgages: You probably won’t be able to procure a mortgage without previous credit history, but having one is a good way to show responsible payment behavior.

  • Personal line of credit: A personal line of credit is a revolving amount issued by a bank. Credit cards are often called lines of credit, but there are many other forms. This will give you a similar credit effect to having a credit card.

  • HELOC (home equity line of credit): A HELOC is a loan taken out using your home as collateral. Like a line of credit or credit card, it’s a revolving credit account.

So it’s clear that there are other forms of credit available. Of course, credit cards are generally the easiest to get approved for and use to build credit. If you’re afraid of having too much available credit on a credit card, there may be a better option.

A secured credit card is backed by a cash deposit usually equal to the credit card limit. The bank doesn’t incur risk because it has the money if you fail to make payments. And you can choose to put down a small amount to keep your credit limit low to avoid overspending. However, you need to make sure your issuer reports your secured credit card activity to the credit agencies. Otherwise, it isn’t an effective tool.

Bottom line: If you truly hate credit cards, despite their many benefits, there are other ways to build credit. Use other types of credit — preferably at least one that’s revolving — to prove your creditworthiness. And if you’re willing to try a cash-backed credit card, a secured card is a great option that’s easy to get approved for.

How To Make Money Buying and Selling Gold

How much can I make buying gold?

Unscrupulous gold dealers like the ones that advertise on radio and TV ask you to mail your gold in to them. They typically pay between 10% and 20% of the value of gold. Most pawnshops pay about 30% to 35%.
Legitimate dealers pay between 40% and 65%. 40% to 65% may seem low to you, but remember, the gold you buy has to be smelted, refined, assayed and poured into ingots before it can be resold. Refiners who do this will pay you between 85% and 92% of the spot price of gold.
Lets look at a typical sale. The average person tends to bring in three or four items that altogether weigh about 2 ounces. Most items people bring me are 14K gold which is 58% pure gold and the rest is alloys to lend gold its color and hardness.

Where do you find people with Gold to sell?

I live in a small town of about 12,000 people. I was driving to the supermarket on a recent Saturday and saw several signs that said: “Cash for Gold and Silver Today at the Majestic Hotel.” After I left the market, I drove over to the Majestic Hotel to see what was going on.
There was a gentleman in one of the meeting rooms off of the lobby with a table, a scale and calculator and a cash box. He was meeting with a lady while two more people waited their turn. I didn’t want to bother him, but the lady who works at the reception desk is a friend of mine, so I asked her how he was doing. She told me he has had a steady stream of customers all day. Imagine if each person brought in just one ounce of gold and he saw 20 or 30 people that day. That is a huge amount of money

Gold Parties are a booming business

One of the things I show you how to do with my system is throw gold parties. You have all heard of home parties for Tupperware, cosmetics or cooking gadgets. Well at those parties people spend money. When people attend a gold party they make money! If you can get 10 people to a gold party you can buy several ounces of gold, -potential profit of up to 45% on each ounce And the hostess, who put on the party, will get 10% of what you make. Now that’s what I call a “win-win.”

What kind of gold do you buy?

Here is a list of some of the gold pieces I see every day:
  • Outdated jewelry
  • Broken or bent items
  • Gold chains
  • Class rings
  • Bracelets
  • Pins
  • Broaches
  • Wedding or engagement ring from an ex-spouse
  • Retirement pins
  • Watches
  • Tangled bracelets and chains
  • Wedding bands
  • Items with missing stones
  • Single earrings
  • Those giant earrings from the 80′s
  • That promise ring from the ex-boyfriend you would like to forget about.

I Swear That Credit Card Charge Isn’t Mine!

It’s happened to just about all of us. We get our monthly statement and see something amiss. You are certain that you have a wrong credit card charge from “Chubby Charlie’s Disco Balls and Tackle Bait Shop” in No Name, Colorado. Or perhaps there’s the infamous recurring wrong credit card charge from “DatingDummies.com” that you also have nothing to do with.

Now you just have to convince your issuer that those are, in fact, erroneous credit card charges.

The good news is you did something that not enough consumers do: You actually checked your darn statement at month’s end to make sure that incorrect credit card charges aren’t being made to your account.

What to do

The first step is to make sure that this is, in fact, an erroneous credit card charge. Many times a company will operate under one name but charge credit cards under a different name. You should be able to track the phone number for the company down and call to see if they operate under a different name. If you can’t find a phone number, then it’s even more likely this is a fraudulent charge.

Another route is to search for the name of the company on a search engine and the words “fraudulent charge.” Trust me, if this is a common scam, you’ll find entries to confirm your suspicion.

It will likely do no good to call the company, if you even can, to get the wrong credit card charge reversed. If it’s a scam or an intentionally unauthorized charge, they won’t remove anything. They may even try and trick you into giving them personal information.

Contact your issuer

If you’ve hit on a wrong credit card charge, call the customer service number for your card. They will likely push you to the fraud department. Just tell them what’s going on. They are super-helpful with these issues. They want to show you they’re on your side and helping protect you from fraud.

There’s more good news. Most credit card issuers will merely send you a form that you must fill out, noting which are the wrong credit card charges. The issuer will remove them from your account and investigate independently. It’s easier for them to investigate and write off the loss than lose a potentially good customer. You won’t be held liable.

What if they don’t believe you?

What if you run into trouble, or the issuer doesn’t believe you? This is exceedingly rare.

However, you should do everything you can to help prove your case, especially if the charge is from someplace similar to places you make regular charges.

It’s easy to point out that you’ve never been to No Name, Colorado, and have never charged anything in the entire state, especially if that’s the case! They will also appreciate it if you print out anything you find on the Internet about fraudulent or wrong credit card charges coming from the company in question.

Anything that establishes your whereabouts on the date and time of the charge helps, too. Things like cell phone records that show you were on a phone call, and not at home or near a computer, can help. Of course, filing a police report is a particularly convincing item to provide. Few people will lie to the police.

Find the fraudster?

Oh, and if you think you’ve been skimmed, look at the last authorized charge and the first unauthorized charge, and examine the time periods between them. Retrace your steps. Somewhere geographically or temporally around that last authorized charge is probably where your card information got stolen.

If it was a restaurant, or gas station, or somewhere where you slid your card personally or you handed it to someone else, then your card was likely skimmed. Call the merchant and report it, and call your local police as well. There’s no reason someone else should have their data stolen, too.

Sick of Swiping? Get Excited About These 3 Developments in Credit Card Tech!

If you’re sick of having to swipe your credit card to buy your daily latte or public transit fare, you’re in luck. There are several exciting developments in credit card payment technology on the horizon that will make paying for your purchases much simpler.

Ready to learn more? Dig into the details below — there’s a lot to look forward to!

Apple is expected to release a mobile payment system

It’s never totally clear what the folks at Apple are up to, but credible sources believe that the company is planning to release a mobile payment system soon. According to a report in USA Today, the Cupertino innovators are hard at work with Visa (and possibly others) to develop a mobile payment system that will operate with its popular iPhone.

If rumors are to be believed, Apple’s new mobile payment system will allow the iPhone to operate in place of a credit card. How it will work remains a mystery – perhaps near field communication (NFC), perhaps Bluetooth, perhaps some other technology altogether.

Meanwhile, security experts are buzzing about how users’ payment information will be stored. According to an article in Apple Insider:

“… Sensitive customer information would likely be stored in an iPhone’s secure enclave, or alternatively in the cloud. Apple has illustrated similar arrangements in numerous patents …”

Multiple reports claim that Apple’s mobile payment system could become available as early as fall 2014. The Nerds are excited to see how things shape up!

New York City MetroCards to be replaced by instant smartphone payments

The subway is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get around in New York City, but the process of paying for your ride certainly isn’t streamlined. Currently, you have to pay for your MetroCard at a kiosk, then swipe it to enter the subway platform. Essentially, this is a two-swipe system – one to pay for your MetroCard with your credit or debit card, then another to actually get on the train.

It appears that there are plans in the works to eliminate the need for MetroCards altogether. The online magazine Slate reports that by 2019, MetroCards are expected to be phased out in favor of technology that will allow customers to pay for rides by tapping their payment-enabled smartphones (or perhaps credit cards) at subway entrance points. By eliminating the need to swipe any type of card, it’s expected that this new system will make boarding public transit much smoother.

The Big Apple will have to wait a while for tap-and-pay subway rides to go mainstream, but it seems promising. Plus, there’s always the possibility that what starts in America’s biggest city will become the norm nationwide in short order. This means that public transit customers all over the country could be in for a much better commute within the decade!

Barclaycard is introducing a new contactless payment wristband

Wearable technology is all the rage, and Barclaycard is the latest company to get in on the action. The British credit card issuer is launching a wristband that allows customers to pay for their goods by scanning it over a payment terminal; it uses the same technology that’s embedded in Barclays credit and debit cards, some of which have allowed for contact-less payments since 2007.

Known as “bPay” bands, the wristbands are being distributed at special events hosted by Barclays throughout 2014, and will be released to the general public sometime in 2015. According to a story in The Telegraph:

“Barclaycard plans to make the bands free of charge and will allow them to be used by the majority of UK card users, not just its own customers.”

It doesn’t appear that there are plans for a similar product launch outside of the UK just yet, but the Nerds are hopeful that other credit card issuers will jump on the bandwagon!
