After getting GED

Completing the GED: The Next Step

Passing the General Educational Development (GED) exam is a true accomplishment. According to GED Testing Service, the organization that manages the GED, the test is designed to show that you have the academic skills demonstrated by 60% of high school seniors.
Successful completion of the exam means you've earned a high school equivalency credential, which reflects a similar (but not identical) level of academic achievement compared to a high school diploma. In order to use this credential, you need to obtain a copy of your GED transcript. For people who took the test in the U.S. or Canada, this can be acquired by contacting your original testing center. Military personnel, test takers in correctional facilities and individuals who took the exam overseas can request a copy via the GED Testing Service transcript request form.
Once you have a copy of your transcript, there are two main ways you can take advantage of your new credential - you can pursue postsecondary education or advance in your career.

College

Some of the many reasons to pursue a college degree include increased career opportunities and better earning potential. Although your new credential doesn't guarantee college admission, it can open doors: According to GED Testing Service, over 95% of colleges and universities accept the GED transcript in lieu of a high school diploma for admission.
If you're considering postsecondary study, you'll first want to decide on your long-term goals. If you have a career in mind, find out what the typical educational requirements are, including specific subject areas and advanced degrees. For example, most states allow you to become a registered nurse with just an associate's degree in nursing, but you'll eventually need a master's degree in the field to become a nurse practitioner.
Once you've determined the degree path that meets your goals, look for local schools that offer relevant opportunities. If you're unsure what you want to do in the long run, consider starting with a local 2-year institution. Most community colleges offer lower tuition and convenient locations. Earning an associate's degree can also reduce the time and cost required to earn a bachelor's degree should you eventually transfer to a 4-year college or university.

Career

Passing the GED can also help you advance your career. Even if you aren't interested in pursuing long-term postsecondary education, your new credential can help you access professional training programs at community colleges and vocational schools.
Your GED transcript can also help you get through the door at a new job or advance within your current company. GED Testing Service reports that 96% of employers accept the high school equivalency credential for hiring eligibility.
If you are currently looking for work, be sure to include your new credential on your resume. There are many services available to adults who are looking for a job. First, contact the career services center at the institution at which you took the GED exam. If the testing center doesn't offer services, stop by your city library or look up your local workforce development office for assistance.
If you're happy with your current company, ask your boss to meet with you. Tell him or her about your recent achievement and find out if it opens up any new opportunities for you within the company. You may not be offered a promotion right away, but your GED credential could qualify you to apply for another position at the appropriate time.

Michigan State University 2016 - College Scholarships 2016

College Scholarships

Michigan State University
It seems that some English Lit majors would practically give their first-born child to be able to study the major abroad. Thankfully, you don’t have to resort to that, as students at Michigan State University have access to one of the most progressive literature study abroad programs in the country.
Interested majors may apply to the MSU semester program, English Literature in Dublin, Ireland. What English Lit major would not want to walk amid the writerly haunts, as did James Joyce or William Butler Yeats? Free Air Force ROTC scholarships 2016 - Free scholarships 2016

WHAT IS AIR FORCE ROTC?

Air Force ROTC is a college program offered at more than 1,100 colleges and universities across the U.S. It prepares you to become an Air Force Officer while earning a college degree. And it gives you the opportunity to get the tuition money you need. But more than that—it’s a challenge, a head start on a lifetime of success, within the Air Force and in everything you choose to do.
In Air Force ROTC, you’ll make the most of your college experience. You’ll hone your time-management skills, analytical skills and physical fitness. It won’t be easy. But if you’re up to the challenge, the rewards will last a lifetime.
There are three different types of scholarships, and the application process is the same for all of them.
Type 1—Pays full college tuition, most fees and a book allowance. Approximately five percent of our four-year scholarships are Type 1—mostly in technical fields as deemed needed by the Air Force (careers with a scientific basis such as engineering, chemistry and meteorology).
Type 2—Pays college tuition and most fees up to $18,000 and a book allowance. Approximately 15 percent of our four-year scholarship winners will be offered a Type 2 scholarship (again, mostly in technical fields). If a student attends an institution where the tuition exceeds $18,000 per year, then he/she pays the difference.
Type 7—Pays college tuition up to the equivalent of a public school’s in-state rate and a book allowance. If a student receives a Type 7 offer but wishes to attend a college/university where they do not qualify under the guidelines, the student can convert the four-year Type 7 scholarship to a three-year Type 2 scholarship. You cannot activate a Type 7 scholarship at a nonqualifying school and pay the difference.

SCHOLARSHIP LENGTH

Three- and four-year scholarships are available. All four-year scholarships activate in the fall of your freshman year.
All three-year scholarships activate in the fall of your sophomore year. The only three-year type of scholarship offered is Type 2. All three-year scholarship designees must complete AFROTC training during their freshman year in order to retain eligibility to activate their scholarships at the start of their sophomore year.

APPLY NOW

If you are a high school student graduating in 2016, the High School Scholarship Application is currently open. To apply for an Air Force ROTC scholarship, you must have your application submitted online before midnight, December 1. Once you have applied, you must download, complete and upload required forms to our website. The deadline to upload these is January 12. Apply for the High School Scholarship Programhere.

Opportunities for English Majors 2016 - College Scholarships 2016

Opportunities for English Majors

Don’t forget to employ the close-at-hand resources of the college or university of your choice in your pursuit of award monies. Especially since English Literature is such a ubiquitous subject, there are bound to be some financial resources for its pursuit at your college. Contact the English department as well as your financial aid office to find out if there are any more scholarships of which you should be aware. Resources may be abundant in your community, as well. Even non-obvious organizations such as your local library, your local bookstore, or literary association, may have access to other forms of scholarship funding. While the scholarships listed here were primarily from public colleges, don’t neglect the smaller, more specific awards available to targeted groups, such as the R. L. Gillette Scholarship from the American Foundation for the Blind, which supports a woman studying Literature who submits an application and a sample of their best writing.
Be specific in your writing and make sure your prowess of the English language shines through your application to any of these awards. Remember that you are demonstrating your experience with English Literature, in some sense, in all writing that you do. The better your handle on it, the better chance you have of receiving a scholarship to further your studies, especially when that prize assessment involves an essay as most of the literature applications do.

Future Monbukagakusho Research Scholarship Applicant:

Want to pursue (post)graduate studies in Japan with a Monbukagakusho Research Scholarship?

The Monbukagskusho Scholarship (also known as Monbusho Scholarship, MEXT Scholarship or Japanese Government Scholarship) is the dream of thousands of students worldwide. Established in 1954 and offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), it is a scholarship that covers full tuition and very generous monthly stipend for accepted students to attend internationally respected universities in Japan, pursue their academic interests, and receive degrees and qualifications in their respective studies. To date, more than 75,000 students from approximately 160 countries have received this prestigious scholarship and studied at top universities in Japan.

Proficiency in Japanese is not necessarily a prerequisite for receiving a Monbusho Research Scholarship, (in fact I’ve heard that some people have gotten the scholarship despite knowing no Japanese whatsoever) but nevertheless all applicants who make it to the interview stage are required to take a three-part Japanese test. In the U.S., applicants also have the option to take an English proficiency test if they choose (I believe in countries where English is not spoke as a native language, this additional test is required).
