Important To Seek College Scholarships 2014 - 2015

(NAPSI)—While paying for college can be a challenge, for many students, thousands of dollars in scholarships are available each year. In fact, according to a national study by Ipsos, more families use grants and scholarships to fund college than any other source of funding.
Why To Find Scholarships
After all, scholarships are “free money” that doesn’t need to be repaid, which means fewer out-of-pocket costs and the potential to graduate with less student debt.
Where To Find Scholarships
A common misconception about scholarships is that they are meant only for class valedictorians or star athletes. In reality, there are thousands of different scholarships available for students with all types of skills and hobbies. Organizations that offer scholarships can include:
• Employers
• Companies
• High schools and colleges
• Religious groups
• Professional associations
• Foundations and nonprofit organizations.
There are even such fun and unique scholarships as the “Stuck at Prom” Scholarship Contest by Duck brand, awarding students with the most creative duct tape prom outfit.
Here’s another useful fact: Students need not wait till their senior year in high school; younger students should research scholarships and educate themselves on the requirements. Students will be most successful searching for scholarships if they start early, stay focused and do their research.
Also, it’s important to remember to apply for a scholarship for every year you plan to attend college.
How to Find Scholarships
Families can research scholarships online and through their school. Another great resource is the free scholarship search tool at www.SallieMae.com/ScholarshipSearch. That database represents over 3 million scholarships totaling $16 billion.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarships (RMHC) are awarded to eligible high school students with high academic performance and community service as well as financial need. Four types of scholarships are available for students who might not otherwise have an opportunity to attend college.

There are four types of scholarship awards: RMHC/Scholars is open to all students. RMHC/Asia is available for Asian-Pacific students. RMHC/African American Future Achievers accepts applicants of African American or Black Caribbean heritage, and RMHC/Hacer is open to Hispanic/Latino students.

Applicants must be high school seniors, must be younger than 21 years old, and must be eligible to attend a two- or four-year college, university or technical school with a full course of study. Applicants must also maintain a grade point average of 2.7 and contribute at least 25 hours of community service in order to be eligible.

RMHC is the official foundation of McDonald's Corporation, and their mission is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. Since 1985, more than $48 million in scholarships have been awarded to extend educational support to students in financial need.

Ron Brown Scholar Program 2014

The Ron Brown Scholar Program provides scholarship awards to African-American high school seniors who are excelling in their academics, exhibiting exceptional leadership potential, and actively serving in community service activities.
Applicants must be US citizens or must have a permanent resident visa card. They must also be able to demonstrate financial need, and must be in high school. The scholarship awards are not available to current college students.

From thousands of applications, a few finalists will be chosen and invited to participate in a weekend selection process normally in Washington, D.C. at the expense of the CAP Charitable Foundation. They will be interviewed by members of the Ron Brown Selection Committee, and will be expected to participate in several Selection Weekend activities. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of their applications, interviews and participation in Selection Weekend activities.

Recipients can use the funds to pay for tuition, fees, books, room and board, computers, health insurance, and other college-related expenses at an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States. Any field of study can be chosen.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in JANUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $10,000.

Are jobs on campus or off campus? See more ....

Both. If you work on campus, you’ll usually work for your school. If you work off campus, your employer will usually be a private nonprofit organization or a public agency, and the work performed must be in the public interest.
Some schools might have agreements with private for-profit employers for work-study jobs. These jobs must be relevant to your course of study (to the maximum extent possible). If you attend a proprietary school (i.e., a for-profit institution), there may be further restrictions on the types of jobs you can be assigned.
